Outdoor Education at Mounton House School
The Mounton House School Vocational Team believe that outdoor education and recreation promotes well-being, active learning and therapy through experience as well as offering excitement, fun and adventure for all of our pupils. While promoting a positive relationship with the environment and community, outdoor activities give young people the opportunity to find out something new about themselves and develop their ability to work with others, problem solve and show accountability for their own actions.
A 2003 study ‘An Evaluation of an Outdoor Education Programmes for Students with Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties’ by Avramidis (2003) suggests that engagement in outdoor education can also have a positive effect on pupils participation in all aspects of their curriculum – this is why we have embedded our outdoor education programme into the curriculum of Key Stage 4 learners.
Outdoor Education encompasses a wide variety of experiences including adventurous activities on land and water. Here at Mounton House School we have a skills-focused approach to Outdoor Education that includes problem solving, team building, self-reliant expeditions and activities. Challenging outdoor experiences promote the development of communication, self-esteem, problem solving, self-confidence and decision making skills that have currency in a range of occupations and set our pupils up for a positive start to further education, employment and training.
The ongoing outdoor programme at Mounton House also allows our pupils to achieve accredited qualifications in the form of CoPE (Certificate for Personal Effectiveness) Level 1, The Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver Awards and complete units of the BTEC Level 1 in Vocational Studies (Map Reading Using Ordnance Survey Maps and Introduction to Expedition Skills). At Mounton House we strive to make all aspects of our pupil’s school lives inclusive. From start of term taster sessions and staff assessment, we are able to offer enjoyable yet challenging outdoor learning for all of our pupils.
